web analytics post on my other blog

I've made a blog post on my other blog that might be of interest to some of you. For my research job I'm writing a two-part tutorial on how to implement web analytics to track social learning / elearning websites. The first post is an introduction to what web analytics is and why it's valuable.

Constructive criticism, is of course, highly welcome.

Measuring popularity and influence of user-generated content

I made it to one break out session at the Omniture Summit. I choose to attend a session on how to user web analytics to measure user generated content. Specifically how to identify the most popular and most influential content created by users

Why websites like ugc

  • credibility - recommendations from a friend are more credible then from the company
  • frequency - users who make content visit site many more times then users who don't make content
  • targeting - specialized community sites great for advertising niche products.

Seth Godin’s Presentation at the Omniture Summit ‘08

I was previledged to attend the Omniture Summit in Salt Lake City. Here's my notes from Seth Godin's keynote Thursday morning.

Key ideas:
Ideas that spread win
A Marketers job is to spread ideas

He called the 20th century the century of idea diffusion

Marketers used to work primarily by TV through what Seth called the TV Industrial Complex.

Everyone watched the same tv shows. TV advertising was the power to interrupt consumers whenever they wanted to

Tips on live blogging a conference

Clint has asked us to blog about what we learn at the Omniture Summit this week. We're blogging to A, teach others in the class about the sessions they can't make and B, it'll help us take more from the sessions we can attend.

But how does one blog about a conference session? I ran an excellent guide the other day from some experienced conference bloggers. They give advice on:

  • Tools
  • Where to sit
  • How to prepare
  • Proper style
  • How to properly quote the speaker

Thoughts on the Omniture Web Analytics competition

I recently participated in the Omniture Web Analytics competition at BYU. Omniture is the largest independent web analytics company in the world and just happens to be founded by two BYU students (in the mid-90s) and is located in Orem, Utah, 10 minutes north of BYU's campus.

Omniture sponsors a number of great events here at BYU (and hires many of our graduates). So they've got a warm spot in our hearts.

Page Views is dead, what comes next?

Interesting article about how the standard metrics to measure the reach of a site are changing as the web becomes more interactive with AJAX, flash, videos, etc. The old standby "page views" is dead but no one is yet what to replace it with.
