Seth Godin’s Presentation at the Omniture Summit ‘08

I was previledged to attend the Omniture Summit in Salt Lake City. Here's my notes from Seth Godin's keynote Thursday morning.

Key ideas:
Ideas that spread win
A Marketers job is to spread ideas

He called the 20th century the century of idea diffusion

Marketers used to work primarily by TV through what Seth called the TV Industrial Complex.

Everyone watched the same tv shows. TV advertising was the power to interrupt consumers whenever they wanted to

But interrupting people doesn't work anymore. The marketplace is saturated with products. So if your product isn't remarkable, no one pays attention.

Your product must be a purple cow.

Purple cow products spread this way:
1. The product is remarkable
2. You tell your story to those who like to spread stories
3. They spread the story
4. You get permission to tell another story

Understanding how ideas spread on the internet fascinates me.

Here's some books on the subject.
Tipping Point, Here Comes Everyone, , Long Tail, The Cluetrain manifesto -- markets are conversations.
